Micro Brewing

Micro brewing is a fairly contemporary term that refers to brewing a limited amount of beer. Usually a microbrewery will still function commercially, but on a far smaller scale than one of the major beer distribution companies.

The maximum amount of beer that a brewery can produce and still be called and classified as a microbrewery varies by region. (Usually, it is something like 475,000 gallons per year.)

Clearly, this is a larger number than any home brewer will produce. However, much of the philosophy is the same. One of the benefits of microbreweries is that they allow brewers to experiment with different recipes and flavors, often selling seasonal beers. These breweries allow a more personal touch and more distinctive flavors than massively produced beer that is specifically meant to taste the same every time.
